SI Decimal vs IEC Binary
In the data storage field, there are two parallel unit systems: SI decimal units (KB, MB, GB, TB) and IEC binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). Understanding the difference is crucial.
In short: storage device manufacturers typically use SI decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes), while operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS) typically use IEC binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is why the "1TB" hard drive you bought shows only about 931GB on your computer.

FAQ
KB (Kilobyte) is an SI decimal unit, 1 KB = 1,000 bytes (10³). KiB (Kibibyte) is an IEC binary unit, 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes (2¹⁰). Although people often use these terms interchangeably in daily conversation, in precise calculations (such as programming and storage management), the difference becomes significantly larger at higher orders of magnitude. For example, the difference between 1 TB and 1 TiB is about 10%.
Because hard drive manufacturers use decimal (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), while operating systems use binary (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). After conversion: 1,000,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 931.32, so the OS displays about 931 GB (actually GiB, but typically labeled as GB). This is normal and does not indicate insufficient drive capacity.
1 Byte = 8 bits. This is a fundamental definition in computer science. A bit is the smallest unit of data, representing a single binary digit (0 or 1). A byte is the basic unit of data storage, consisting of 8 bits. In network transmission, bandwidth is typically measured in bps (bits per second), while file download speeds are typically displayed in B/s (bytes per second).

This tool uses JavaScript double-precision floating-point numbers (64-bit IEEE 754) for calculations, which is sufficiently accurate for the vast majority of everyday scenarios. Decimal portions are capped at 6 significant decimal places, and excessively long decimals are automatically truncated. For extremely large or small values (e.g. at the PB level), there may be minor errors due to floating-point precision limitations, but this has virtually no practical impact.
