Effect of temperature on density: The density of most substances changes with temperature. For solids and liquids, increasing temperature causes volume expansion and density decrease; decreasing temperature causes volume contraction and density increase. Gas density is particularly sensitive to both temperature and pressure changes.
Taking water as an example: water reaches its maximum density at 4°C, approximately 1,000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³). When heated to 100°C, water density drops to about 958 kg/m³; when cooled to 0°C and frozen, ice density is about 917 kg/m³, which is lighter than water — this is why ice floats on water.
In engineering practice, if precise density calculations are required (such as fuel metering or chemical proportioning), temperature factors must be considered. This tool provides pure numerical conversion; in actual applications, corrections should be made based on the substance's temperature-density curve.
1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³. Conversion principle: 1 g/cm³ = 0.001 kg / 0.000001 m³ = 1,000 kg/m³. This is one of the most commonly used density conversions. For example, water has a density of about 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³, and iron has a density of about 7.85 g/cm³ = 7,850 kg/m³. Conversely, 1 kg/m³ = 0.001 g/cm³.
1 kg/L = 1,000 kg/m³, 1 kg/m³ = 0.001 kg/L. Since 1 liter (L) = 0.001 cubic meter (m³), the same mass distributed in 1 liter volume has 1,000 times the density of that distributed in 1 cubic meter. For example, gasoline density is about 0.75 kg/L = 750 kg/m³, and milk density is about 1.03 kg/L = 1,030 kg/m³.
Since 1 UK gallon ≈ 4.546 L and 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 L, they differ by about 20%. Therefore, for the same lb/gal value, the UK measure represents a lower density. For example, a liquid with density of 10 lb/UK gal ≈ 997.8 kg/m³, while 10 lb/US gal ≈ 1,198.3 kg/m³. When reading British or American petroleum and chemical documents, pay attention to the gallon type — this tool supports both gallon units.
Water reaches its maximum density at 4°C (approximately 1,000 kg/m³) because of hydrogen bonds between water molecules. As water temperature rises from 0°C, hydrogen bonds gradually break, allowing molecules to pack more tightly and density to increase; above 4°C, thermal expansion from increased molecular motion dominates and density begins to decrease. This property keeps the bottom water of lakes at about 4°C in winter, protecting aquatic life through the cold season.
No. All conversion calculations run entirely in your browser using pure JavaScript math. Your input data never leaves your device, so please feel free to use it.
This tool uses JavaScript double-precision floating-point numbers (64-bit IEEE 754) for calculations, providing sufficient accuracy for the vast majority of everyday scenarios. Imperial units use internationally standardized conversion ratios (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 UK gal = 4.54609 L, 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L). Decimal portions are capped at 6 significant decimal places, and excessively long decimals are automatically truncated. For extremely large or small values, there may be minor errors due to floating-point precision limitations, but this has virtually no practical impact.
Fifteen common units are supported: metric (kg/m³, g/cm³, g/m³, mg/m³, kg/L, g/L, t/m³), imperial (lb/ft³, lb/in³, lb/UK gal, lb/US gal), and the ounce series (oz/ft³, oz/in³, oz/UK gal, oz/US gal). This covers multiple industries such as physics, materials, chemical engineering, petroleum, and logistics.
No login and no limits. This tool is completely free to use. Just open the page to start; no account registration is needed, and there is no daily conversion limit, making it ideal for on-the-go density conversions anytime.
1 lb/ft³ ≈ 16.0185 kg/m³. Based on: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 ft³ = 0.0283168 m³, so 1 lb/ft³ = 0.45359237 ÷ 0.0283168 ≈ 16.0185 kg/m³. This tool gives corresponding values for all imperial and metric units with one click.

Material density is affected by temperature, pressure, purity, and measurement methods. For example, steel density is about 7.85 g/cm³ but varies slightly by alloy composition; water reaches its maximum density at 4°C. The reference values provided by this tool are based on standard ambient temperature and pressure; for scientific research, please rely on authoritative handbooks.
