The ampere (symbol A) is the base unit of electric current in the International System of Units (SI), one of the seven base units. Since the 2019 redefinition, 1 ampere is defined as: when the elementary charge e = 1.602176634 × 10-19 C, the current at which 1 coulomb (C) of charge passes through a conductor cross-section per second, i.e., 1 A = 1 C/s.
Historically, the ampere was defined as "the constant current that, if maintained in two straight parallel conductors of infinite length and negligible cross-section placed 1 meter apart in a vacuum, would produce a force of 2 × 10-7 N/m between them." The new definition took effect on May 20, 2019, making the ampere independent of any specific experimental apparatus.
1 A = 1,000 mA, 1 mA = 1,000 μA. SI current units use powers of 1,000: 1 kA = 1,000 A, 1 A = 1,000 mA = 1,000,000 μA = 109 nA = 1012 pA. In daily life, phone charging current is typically 1-3 A, LED operating current is about 10-20 mA, and integrated circuit standby current can be as low as the nA level.
1 abA (abampere, also called biot or Bi) = 10 A. The abampere is the current unit in the centimeter-gram-second electromagnetic unit system (CGS-EMU), once widely used in electromagnetism research. Although the SI has now standardized on the ampere, the abA unit may still appear in some classical physics textbooks and historical literature. 1 abA is defined as "the current that produces a force of 2 dyn/cm between two parallel wires 1 cm apart in a vacuum."
1 statA (statampere, also called esu current) ≈ 3.33564 × 10-10 A. The statampere is the current unit in the centimeter-gram-second electrostatic unit system (CGS-ESU). 1 statA is defined as "the flow of 1 statcoulomb (statC) of charge per second." Since statA is extremely small (about 0.334 nA), it is rarely used in practical engineering and mainly appears in theoretical physics and electromagnetism textbooks.
Typical rated current references for common household appliances (at 220V): LED bulb approx. 0.02-0.1 A, phone charger approx. 0.05-0.15 A (1-3 A at 5V output), laptop approx. 0.3-0.5 A, electric fan approx. 0.2-0.5 A, TV approx. 0.5-1 A, microwave oven approx. 4-6 A, air conditioner approx. 5-15 A, instant water heater can reach 30-40 A. High-power appliances typically require dedicated wiring and higher-rated circuit breakers.
No. All conversion calculations run entirely in your browser using pure JavaScript math. Your input data never leaves your device.
This tool uses JavaScript double-precision floating-point numbers (64-bit IEEE 754) for calculations, which is sufficiently accurate for the vast majority of everyday scenarios. SI units use exact powers-of-10 conversion factors (e.g., 1 mA = 0.001 A exact), while electromagnetic and electrostatic unit systems use widely accepted conversion coefficients. Decimal portions are capped at 6 significant decimal places, and excessively long decimals are automatically truncated. For extremely large or small values, there may be minor errors due to floating-point precision limitations, but this has virtually no practical impact.
It supports 8 current units: SI (pA, nA, μA, mA, A, kA), electromagnetic (abA), and electrostatic (statA). Enter a value in one unit and the others are calculated automatically.
No. The tool is completely free and requires no registration or login. Just open the page and start using it—no ads, no personal information requested, ideal for circuit design and study references.
Yes. The page is responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktop browsers alike. On mobile, simply tap the input, choose a unit, and tap convert to see results, just like on desktop.
Batch input is not yet supported. The current version converts one value at a time, but a single entry yields results for all 8 units at once, which covers most circuit and engineering scenarios.
Mainly in classical physics and historical literature. The abampere and statampere belong to the CGS system; modern engineering has standardized on the SI ampere. You may encounter them when reading older textbooks or tracing the history of electromagnetism—this tool helps you compare them quickly.
