Impact of US Gallon vs UK Gallon on Fuel Economy
US gallon is approximately 3.785 liters, while UK gallon is approximately 4.546 liters. The UK gallon is about 20% larger than the US gallon.
For the same MPG number, UK MPG represents lower fuel consumption (more fuel-efficient), because the larger UK gallon allows more distance to be traveled with the same amount of fuel. For example, a car rated at 40 MPG: if it is US MPG, it equals 5.88 L/100km; if it is UK MPG, it equals 7.06 L/100km. Therefore, when comparing fuel economy of US and UK vehicles, you must pay attention to the gallon type and cannot directly compare the numbers.

L/100km and km/L are reciprocals: km/L = 100 ÷ (L/100km), L/100km = 100 ÷ (km/L). L/100km represents the liters of fuel consumed per 100 km driven, commonly used in China and Europe — the lower the number, the more fuel-efficient. km/L represents how many kilometers can be driven per liter of fuel — the higher the number, the more fuel-efficient. For example, 8 L/100km = 12.5 km/L, 15 km/L ≈ 6.67 L/100km.
L/100km ≈ 235.215 ÷ US MPG, US MPG ≈ 235.215 ÷ (L/100km). Conversion principle: US MPG (miles per US gallon) → km/L = US MPG × 1.609344 ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ US MPG × 0.425144; then to L/100km = 100 ÷ (km/L). For example, 30 US MPG ≈ 7.84 L/100km, 10 L/100km ≈ 23.5 US MPG.
For the same car, UK MPG numbers are approximately 20% larger than US MPG. This is because the UK gallon (≈ 4.546 L) is about 20% larger than the US gallon (≈ 3.785 L). Conversion: UK MPG ≈ US MPG × 1.20095, US MPG ≈ UK MPG ÷ 1.20095. For example, a car showing 30 US MPG is approximately 36 UK MPG. When reading UK car magazines or websites, you cannot directly compare UK MPG with US MPG.
G/100mi (gallons per 100 miles) is another fuel consumption expression used in the US, similar to L/100km, indicating how many gallons are consumed per 100 miles driven. It is the reciprocal of US MPG: G/100mi = 100 ÷ US MPG. For example, a 25 US MPG car has a G/100mi value of 4.0. G/100mi sometimes appears on US EPA fuel economy labels — the lower the number, the more fuel-efficient.

Decimal portions are capped at 6 significant decimal places, and excessively long decimals are automatically truncated. For extremely large or small values, there may be minor errors due to floating-point precision limitations, but this has virtually no practical impact.
