Understanding L/100km vs MPG
L/100km and MPG are two commonly used metrics for measuring fuel economy, but they have opposite meanings. L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers) indicates the amount of fuel consumed to travel 100 kilometers — lower values mean better fuel efficiency. It is the standard used in China and Europe. MPG (miles per gallon) indicates how many miles can be traveled per gallon of fuel — higher values mean better fuel efficiency. It is the standard used in the US and UK.
The relationship between the two is not a simple linear one but an inverse relationship: L/100km = 235.215 / MPG (US), L/100km = 282.481 / MPG (UK). This is because US gallons (≈3.785L) and UK gallons (≈4.546L) have different capacities. For example, a car rated at 30 MPG (US) converts to approximately 7.84 L/100km. It is important to note that because the UK gallon is larger than the US gallon, the same car will have an MPG (UK) rating approximately 20% higher than its MPG (US) rating.

L/100km indicates how many liters of fuel are consumed per 100 kilometers — lower is better; km/L indicates how many kilometers can be traveled per liter of fuel — higher is better. The two are reciprocals: km/L = 100 ÷ L/100km. For example, 7.5 L/100km ≈ 13.3 km/L. China and Europe commonly use L/100km, while Japan and some Asian countries commonly use km/L.
The difference lies in the gallon capacity: US gallon ≈ 3.785 liters, UK gallon ≈ 4.546 liters. Since the UK gallon is larger, the MPG (UK) value will be approximately 20% higher than the MPG (US) value for the same fuel consumption. For example, a car rated at 30 MPG (US) is equivalent to approximately 36 MPG (UK). When checking overseas vehicle specifications, always pay attention to which MPG standard is being used.
Conversion formula: L/100km = 235.215 ÷ MPG (US), L/100km = 282.481 ÷ MPG (UK). For example, a car rated at 30 MPG (US) has a fuel consumption of 235.215 ÷ 30 ≈ 7.84 L/100km; a car rated at 40 MPG (UK) has a fuel consumption of 282.481 ÷ 40 ≈ 7.06 L/100km. The conversion factors are derived from: 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 liters, 1 UK gallon = 4.54609 liters.
Besides the different units (China uses L/100km, the US uses MPG), the testing standards are also different. China uses WLTC (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle) or CLTC (China Light-duty Vehicle Test Cycle), while the US uses the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) test standard. Fuel consumption data from different test standards cannot be directly compared. This tool only performs numerical unit conversion, assuming identical test conditions.
