Different version numbers and suffixes mean different compliance requirements. Choose by your archive and compatibility needs:

FAQ

Did the file get larger after conversion?

Usually yes, because PDF/A requires embedding all fonts and color profiles to guarantee long-term readability — a trade-off made for compatibility and preservation.

What is the difference between the A, B, and U suffixes?

A requires full compliance (including accessibility structure); B is basic compliance that only guarantees visual consistency; U builds on B by requiring Unicode text mapping for easier text search and copy. For general archiving, B is enough.

Why did the conversion fail?

A few PDFs use unsupported features (e.g. encryption, or fonts that cannot be extracted) and will fail. We recommend removing the password or printing to a normal PDF before converting.

Will my file be uploaded to a server?
